Cash closes a dead end: a lost passkey no longer locks you out

14 October 2026

Change #7869 has been merged into the main branch. It is small — 76 lines added against eight removed across nine files — but it closes a situation that had no way out.

What was wrong

Rainbow Cash has a "Sign in to continue" screen. It carried a single button, Continue, and that button only retried the passkey prompt. If the passkey was lost, you could press it as long as you liked: there was nowhere to go from that screen inside the app.

And in Cash the passkey is the key to the money in the account. So a person with funds stayed locked outside.

What was done

A Recover Lost Passkey link now sits under the button. It opens Setup in a restore mode:

The solution is neatly built

Restore mode is a single flag on the phone-step store, raised before Setup opens and cleared when it closes. The rule that follows is this: a usable passkey exists if there is an account and we are not restoring.

Because of that, during recovery the app treats the stored account as an account without a passkey — and every branch already written for the "no passkey" case started working on its own. Cancelling mid-recovery shows the warning, and an expired token resets to the phone step instead of leaving the person stuck on the passkey step. No new branches had to be written.

Where it works

Cash is available to US-based customers only — and not in New York or California — with a Visa card. That is the wording in the app itself. Outside the US there is no such section at all: it offers no country to choose.

Is it in the app yet

Not yet. The latest released version is 2.0.46 from 8 October, and the change was merged on the 14th. Rainbow does not announce in advance which version it will land in.
