We explain how the Rainbow wallet works and take the RNBW token apart using Base blockchain data: live price, staking yield, fees, risks. No forecasts and no advertising.
What the app can do
DeFiLlama computes the annual figure itself, and we take it as it is. Multiplying a good month by twelve would give $2.3 million — but that would be our number, not the source's.
Money on an exchange and money in a wallet are both recorded on a blockchain. The only difference is who holds the key that moves it.
On an exchange
You see a number in your account, but the exchange controls the coins. It can ask for documents, freeze a withdrawal, or shut down altogether. A forgotten password can be restored for you.
In the Rainbow wallet
Neither Rainbow nor anyone else will stop your transfer or demand your documents. The other side of that shows up the day the phone is lost: the only way back in is the twelve words you wrote down during setup.
Wallets like this are called self-custody. Rainbow's code is open: the rainbow-me organisation on GitHub was created on 7 March 2019 and holds 69 public repositories.
Download it from rainbow.me, the store links are there too. Fakes imitating well-known wallets turn up in the stores regularly, so check the developer name before installing.
The app will show twelve words. Copy them onto paper: a screenshot ends up in the cloud, and so does a note. These words replace every password, so whoever sees them takes the whole wallet.
Send from an exchange or buy inside the app. Send about five dollars the first time: if the address was copied wrong, the money goes nowhere and cannot be recovered.
Send a transfer or swap one coin for another. The app shows the fee before you confirm, so there is no surprise at the end.
| For what | Paid to | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Installing and holding | — | free |
| Transfer between wallets | the blockchain network | ≈ $0.001 on Base |
| Swap inside the app | Rainbow | 0.85% |
| Swap inside the app | the venue where the trade happens | that venue's rate |
The network fee is set by the network, and on Base it is pennies. We measured it on 10 September 2026: gas was 0.006 gwei and a USDC transfer cost about a tenth of a cent. Other networks can be orders of magnitude more expensive, and the app shows that amount in advance.
Rainbow's 0.85% is taken from the size of the trade, regardless of gas. Over the last 12 months that brought the app $2,176,616 — DeFiLlama data as of 10 September 2026. The figure is live and changes every day.
The wallet works without the token, and you do not have to buy RNBW. It does one thing: it returns part of that 0.85% fee to you. The more tokens you have locked in staking, the larger the share that comes back.
| Tier | Must be locked | Refund |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 5,000 RNBW | 25% |
| Gold | 10,000 RNBW | 50% |
| Diamond | 15,000 RNBW | 75% |
| Black | 20,000 RNBW | 100% |
Locking more than 20,000 gains you nothing — the refund percentage stops rising there. You can only exit staking with the whole amount at once, and 10% is withheld on the way out; those tokens are then handed to everyone who stayed over seven days. All of this is written into the staking contract — its address is in the sources.
The purchase happens inside the Rainbow wallet; you do not need a separate venue. The whole path is four steps in an app that is already on your phone.
You need ETH or USDC on Base specifically — that is where the token lives. If your coins are on another network, the app will move them itself; it has cross-network transfers built in.
The "Swap" button on the main screen. Pick ETH or USDC in the "you pay" field, and search for RNBW in the "you get" field.
Search may turn up several tokens with the RNBW ticker, and only one is real. Check the address before swapping: 0xa53887F7e7c1bf5010b8627F1C1ba94fE7a5d6E0, Base network. It is the same address as in our sources section.
The app shows the rate, its own 0.85% fee and the network fee before you confirm. The tokens arrive in the same wallet within a few seconds.
For the fee refund to start, the tokens you bought have to be locked in staking — in the same app. The threshold for the top tier with a full refund is 20,000 RNBW. Remember the 10% exit fee: only stake what you are prepared to leave alone.
Writing to support is pointless: Rainbow does not have your key and never did. That is how every self-custody wallet works.
On 18 December 2025 RNBW sold at $0.10. It is now worth … — so today the same token costs markedly less than it did for the sale participants. It sits in this section because the reasons for the fall — growing supply and thin liquidity — have not gone away: whether today's price turns out to be a good one depends on whether they change.
That is 7% of the entire supply and 39% of what trades today: for every ten tokens on the market, roughly four more will be added. The share is calculated against the 180M in circulation as of 14 September 2026 — if circulation grows, the share will be smaller.
The contract hands out what was put into it. The reserve usually holds less than a day of drip, so payouts rest on regular top-ups from the treasury.
The pool is small, so a large amount cannot be sold at the quoted price. The quote and what you would actually get differ by a multiple.
